En este artículo se revisa la investigación disponible acerca de las propiedades melódicas del habla dirigida a niños (hdn) y su impacto en el desarrollo del lenguaje infantil. Para proporcionar una visión amplia acerca de las propiedades del hdn, se remite a obras clásicas, basadas mayoritariamente en reportes acerca del idioma inglés; asimismo, se revisan trabajos más recientes que analizan el hdn en diversas lenguas y tradiciones culturales. Se describen las modificaciones prosódicas y fonéticas más frecuentes desde el punto de vista translingüístico y transcultural. Después, planteamos la importancia que tiene la experiencia en el proceso del desarrollo lingüístico. Finalmente, analizamos cómo las propiedades prosódicas del hdn pueden impactar en el lenguaje temprano en términos de segmentación de la cadena de habla, la atracción de la atención infantil y la manifestación parental de afecto.
